Altus Group Takes Out the 2026 National Safety Award for Workzone Digitisation

Altus Group has won Best Solution of a WHS Risk (Large Business) at the 33rd National Safety Awards of Excellence for Workzone Digitisation.

Last night, Altus Group was named winner of Best Solution of a WHS Risk (Large Business), at the 33rd NSCA Foundation National Safety Awards of Excellence. The award recognised Workzone Digitisation, our smart worksite safety technology that detects vehicle intrusions into road worksites and alerts traffic controllers in real time.

We are proud of this recognition, and we want to be clear about who it is for.

It is for the traffic controllers, team leaders and traffic management implementers who set up and manage road worksites every day, often at night and alongside live traffic, and for the families who support them.

(L to R): Marc Baensch, Josh Deen, Beth Lilford & James Pennings accept the award for Workzone Digitisation on behalf of Altus Group.

Why Road Worker Safety Matters

Traffic controllers work on foot, often close to passing vehicles, and rely on drivers to follow signage, slow down and stay out of the work zone.

1,314 people died on Australian roads in 2025, a 1.7 per cent increase on the year before. Road safety is directly connected to the environment our people work in.

Beth Lilford, our Head of Digital, accepted the award on behalf of Altus Group and our Workzone Digitisation team. She put it plainly:

“To be recognised amongst a group of people that live and breathe safety is very humbling for us,” Beth said. “Workzone Digitisation is for them, and it’s about getting them home safely. The reason that matters is that more than 1,300 people lost their lives on our roads last year. That’s our working environment. It’s a huge number that we are up against. Technology should and can change that statistic, so we won’t stop until it does.”

How Workzone Digitisation Protects Traffic Controllers

Traditionally, traffic controllers have relied largely on their own observation to identify vehicles entering a worksite. Workzone Digitisation was developed to add another layer of protection.

The system brings together Intellitag, Intellitop cone sensors, Sentry Lasers and a Portable Site Alarm. Together, these technologies detect when a vehicle intrudes into a road worksite and alert crews in real time, so workers are not relying on line of sight alone to identify a hazard. Early warning gives crews more time to respond.

The judges recognised Workzone Digitisation for its exceptional innovation, our commitment to safety as a business priority, a measurable return on investment and exemplary work health and safety standards within the traffic management industry.

What This National Safety Award Means for the Traffic Management Industry

We shared the finalist stage with BMD, the Ferrovial Gamuda Joint Venture on the Coffs Harbour Bypass Project, Monadelphous and Ventia. Every one of those organisations takes safety seriously, and we congratulate them all. To be recognised among them is humbling.

We hope this award sends a message beyond Altus Group: that the safety of traffic controllers deserves the same investment and innovation as any other high-risk work in Australian infrastructure. The technology is available, and we encourage the industry to adopt it.

Thank You to the Clients Who Back Workzone Digitisation

No safety innovation leaves the drawing board without partners willing to back it on real projects. We want to give a heartfelt thank you to the clients who saw the value in Workzone Digitisation early and chose to use it on their worksites.

Every one of those decisions puts better protection around real people on real shifts. This award is shared with you, and we are grateful for your trust.

Why We Won’t Stop

With more than 6.2 million hours of traffic management behind us, we know that safety innovation is never finished. Workzone Digitisation will keep evolving as new technology and new site data show us better ways to protect our crews. An award doesn’t change the road toll. What we do next might.
